The new legislation
New life for old scooters, including those which due to old approvals can no longer circulate in historic centres. There Talet-and for 2500 euros it offers a kit that can be mounted on the best-selling and most popular scooters in Italy. For now on different models Piaggio, Honda And Yamaha but within the year on many others. We start in September and everything was made possible by a new rule which makes it legal to carry out the transformation of a vehicle belonging to the L category using what is referred to as a “electrical requalification system”. Provided that no safety elements are modified and provided that all original features are not altered by the system itself. Therefore, as long as you do not touch the safety devices, it will be possible to mount the engine kit.
The strategy
“The conversion to electric – explains Gianluca Nicchi, Operation Manager of Talet-e – comes from understanding that the planet has finite resources and that we need to move towards renewable energy. May 19th was the day in which Italy reached its Overshoot day, that is, the day in which the Italian territory ran out of resources that nature made available to its inhabitants to be able to conduct their activities and live. Well, thinking of retrofitting a scooter means having embraced the concept of limited resources, reuse, recycling, life extension and therefore circular economy. If you have understood how critical the effects of global warming and the reckless use of the planet’s resources are, you will also have understood the importance of electrical retrofit. If we then add to this awareness that, as often happens in these cases, it is possible to save money in the medium to long term, this is the reason for a conscious choice”.
The technical modification
Initially, the fairing of the vehicle is temporarily removed, after which the engine, transmission casing, tank, drain and wiring. At this point the actual electrification takes place, which consists of the installation of the new wiring, the assembly of the electric motor and electronics on defined points of the chassis, as well as the insertion of the batteries fixed and the optional removable battery. Subsequently, all the components are connected to the new wiring and the vehicle connectivity testing and verification activities begin. Finally, the fairing is repositioned.
Thanks to the fact that 80% of the kit is made up of common parts and only 20% can be customized based on the scooter model, Assembly time is approximately 4 hours. After testing and requesting a new registration document, while waiting for this to be issued, the customer will be able to drive with a temporary document. Talet-e estimates that in a maximum of one week the retrofitted scooter will be able to circulate freely.
The performances
In terms of performance, there will be no significant changes compared to the original scooter, with the exception of the electric motor which will guarantee greener driving. The maximum speed, chassis and mass distribution will remain unchanged, in order to preserve the driving sensations.
The assistance
As regards assistance, Talet-e has a well-defined plan: in the event of a fault, the app which provides information on the battery charge status will allow the origin of the problem to be identified, and Talet-e affiliated workshops will be able to carry out second level diagnosis and replacement of spare parts, if necessary. The entire kit will also be covered by a two year guarantee.
