Beef exports from Brazil totaled 212 thousand tons in May, an increase of 25.85% compared to the same month last year, setting a new monthly record in the historical series, with the country experiencing a moment of greater supply and prices competitive, according to preliminary data from the Secretariat of Foreign Trade (Secex), released this Thursday.
The volume exported by Brazil, the largest global exporter of beef, considers the product fresh, chilled or frozen. May’s total exceeds the 208.0 thousand tons recorded in April and the previous record, in December 2023, of 208.4 thousand tons, according to data from Secex.
Brazil’s shipments, which have exporters such as the giants of the JBS, Marfrig and Minerva Animal Protein Sector, are more competitive against other competing countries, such as the United States, who currently live a low animal supply cycle.
The amount exported last month, $ 954.9 million, represents an increase of 11.3% compared to May 2023, despite a drop in the average price of the exported product of 11.6%, which was more than offset by the increase in volumes.
Big transactions take place after Brazil registered a record of cattle slaughtering by refrigerators in the first quarter, according to figures from the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) released on Thursday, since the country’s livestock lives a cycle of greater supply of animals.
Cattle slaughter in Brazil increased 24.6% in the first quarter compared to the same period last year, IBGE reported.
With beef prices ending the first quarter around 20% below the same period last year, producers increased the slaughter of females.
“As a result, we have prices plummeting due to excess supply reaching the market. With low prices, we export record volumes because we are opening markets and we are cheap (40 dollars/arroba), the cheapest in the world among major exporters, ”the executive director of the consultancy Agrifatto, Lygia Pimentel told Reuters.
She also noted that the IBGE data was in line with expectations.
Faced with low arroba prices, producers are reducing vacancies to generate cash and pay the bills, highlighted an expert.
She added that this cycle of higher animal supply, which has benefited Brazil, should last until the beginning of next year.
