Not buckling up in time: A flight attendant breaks her spine after the plane encounters severe turbulence.
Istanbul – Airplanes are repeatedly and recently more frequently encountering turbulence. Now there has been another incident in the air. Just recently, a passenger on a Boeing 777 died when the plane was caught in air currents on its way to Singapore.
Airplane gets into turbulence: Turkish Airlines Airbus suddenly crashes
According to the Turkish newspaper Hurriyet The Turkish Airlines plane was on its way from Istanbul to Izmir. Although the short-haul flight can be completed in less than an hour, the flight turned into a nightmare.
The pilot is said to have warned the passengers to fasten their seat belts because turbulence was to be expected. Shortly afterwards, the Airbus A321 suddenly plunged into the depths.

A flight attendant reportedly did not manage to fasten her seat belt in time and was thrown against the ceiling. According to Hurriyet her spine and was immediately taken to hospital after landing in Izmir. Apparently the woman had only been working as a flight attendant for two months.
The German Weather Service (DWD) explains that turbulence is the formation and dissolution of vortices in the atmosphere. These vortices generate forces that act on the aircraft and move it up or down.
Tips when turbulence occurs:
- Buckle up
- Keep calm (chew gum, suck candy, think of something nice, do breathing exercises)
- Keep hot drinks safe
- Stow luggage
- And above all: follow the pilot’s instructions
