“The incentives announced months ago and not yet arrived are destroying the car market”: this is how Massimo Artusi, new president of Federauto (dealers association), describes the horror of the moment.
We have never seen anything like this in the history of mobility in Italy. He started talking about it six months ago. And then on February 1st, now almost four months ago, the new incentive scheme was officially presented during the Automotive Roundtable at the Ministry of Business and Made in Italy, with plenty of details on the unit contributions, and that the incentives, still not entered into force.
“I know of no precedents of this nature. I don’t remember anything similar from memory. It is no coincidence that we have just asked the Government, together with Unrae, and in particular the Ministry of Enterprise and Made in Italy, to speed up the procedures for publication in the Official Journal of the Prime Ministerial Decree relating to the remodulation of the incentives for the purchase of low-cost vehicles. emissions, the so-called Ecobonuses, and to quickly activate the IT platform for booking incentives”.
The biggest problem?
“It created enormous anticipation, slowed down purchases, then blocked dealerships and then car manufacturers. A huge chain of damage.”
And now?
“Now we have yards full of cars and orders that don’t come in.”
How will it be resolved?
“Mystery. Every day they tell us that ‘we will publish the decree soon’. But then nothing arrives. And, apart from the economic damage, we are also making a bad impression on customers. And for us trust and credibility are very important.”
In the meantime, the car market seems like a jungle, everyone does as they want…
“Exactly, this is another deleterious effect of the long wait for incentives. Each car manufacturer and each dealer moves differently, creating confusion in the offer”.
Further damage.
“Yes, a terrible thing. I would say more. Besides the damage here there is also the insult because in all this it must be remembered that we as dealers are not even that favorable to incentives”.
Why do they actually drug the market?
“It’s not so much that. The problem is that incentives are now starting to not even have the effect of drugs. There is the normality of the discount. We live in an era of super promotions. The effect of the incentive has now worn off. What we support is that the car tax policy as a whole should be reviewed. And then the market must be left to regulate itself. Finally, it should be remembered that if we intervene with incentives when the market is more or less good, then what do we do when the market goes down? How do we deal with the real crisis?”.
