lThe South American Football Confederation approved this Thursday a change in the regulations of the Copa América 2024, which will be played in the United States starting June 20.
The directors of Conmebol, meeting in Bangkok (Thailand), where the Fifa congress was held the day before, decided that the teams will be able to call up a maximum of 26 players for the tournament.
“In relation to the number of players on the Good Faith List, the decision is that each team may register up to a maximum of 26 players in the Competition (on the good faith list), maintaining a total of 50 people in the delegation that are covered by the organization of the event (accommodation, food, transportation, etc. in accordance with the financial and award regime provided for in Chapter 17 of the Competition Regulations),” says the Conmebol statement.
“All players (up to 26 players) must be on the Provisional List sent until May 5, 2024 (6:00 p.m. Paraguay), in accordance with article 58 of the Regulations,” he adds.
Conmebol had already expanded the calls in 2021
It is not the first time that the Copa América allows the number of players to be expanded. This had already happened in the previous edition, which was played in 2021 in Brazil, when 28 footballers were allowed to register due to the covid-19 pandemic. and changes were even allowed to be made during the competition when positive ones were detected.
There is no obligation to register all 26 players. In fact, Already one team, Brazil, made the official announcement of its roster for the tournament, before Conmebol’s decision, in which coach Dorival Junior announced 23 squads.
“If an AMP decides to register more than 23 players, it must automatically register fewer officials so that there is a total of 50 members in the delegation (in the event that an AMP opts for the registration of 26 players, the number of officials registered on the good list faith must be 24 members, for example)”, explained Conmebol.
The participating teams have already delivered a pre-list of 55 players to Conmebol, which is not required to be made public. The final calls must come from this pre-registration.
