The Government of Panama called its ambassador in Nicaragua for consultations on Monday, April 22 in the face of the “flagrant and repeated” violation of international law by the Nicaraguan diplomatic representation by allowing former Panamanian president Ricardo Martinelli (2009-2014), asylum there, to deploy “political-partisan” actions.
“The Republic of Panama feels truly affected in its territorial integrity by the permissive attitude of the Republic of Nicaragua that flagrantly and repeatedly violates fundamental norms of international law,” the Panamanian Foreign Ministry expressed this Monday in a statement.
Martinelli sought asylum in the Nicaraguan Embassy in Panama on February 7, days after the sentence against him of more than 10 years in prison for money laundering became final.a conviction that disqualified him from competing with the Realizing Goals (RM) party for the Presidency in the elections on May 5.
Through a resolution, the Electoral Court designated Martinelli's running mate, José Raúl Mulino, as the RM's presidential candidate to replace the former president, and prohibited the former president from participating in the political campaign.
