The fight against hatred of Jews at universities must pay particular attention to those forms that are primarily communicated via the detour of “criticism of Israel”. A guest post.
UImmediately after October 7, the day of the worst anti-Semitic atrocities since the Holocaust, and before any military response from Israel, thousands of university lecturers, particularly from Europe and the United States, signed one of numerous declarations of support “in solidarity with Palestine.” The “Israeli regime” was blamed for the “escalation of violence,” while Hamas’ terror was glorified as “resistance of a colonized people” and “Palestinian liberation struggle.” Most of the time, there was no word of empathy for the victims.
In this way, a Manichean worldview is reproduced, which declares the Jewish state and its citizens to be a haven of evil and a legitimate target of terror. Following this template, Judith Butler recently called for the Hamas massacre to be recognized as an “act of armed resistance” against a “state of subjugation and against a violent state apparatus” before debating whether it was appropriate in its execution. She also cast doubt on the mass acts of sexual violence against Israeli women, which have now even been confirmed by the UN. Butler thus represents an ideological cosmos that denies not only the anti-Semitic but also the misogynistic character of Hamas terror.
