The southeast of the country has been dealing with heavy rainfall for two days, resulting in flooding. Large parts of the state of Victoria, southern New South Wales and the northern part of the island nation of Tasmania are plagued by the rising water.
The Australian Bureau of Meteorology reports that the water in some rivers is higher than ever. For example, the water level of the Goulburn River, about 100 kilometers north of Melbourne, exceeds the record height of 7.64 meters measured in 1974.
Despite the forecast that the rain will abate on Friday evening, the Victorian Prime Minister said in a televised interview that the problems are far from over. “We’re going to see the water rise even more, more homes submerged and more communities shut down,” said Daniel Andrews.
