Since December 2021, the German government has been preparing for a possible cessation of Russian gas supplies. This was stated by German Chancellor Olaf Scholz at a joint press conference with representatives of the SDPN, FDP and the Greens.
This is how Scholz commented on the non-resumption of gas supplies via Nord Stream.
“Since December last year, with the Minister of Economics and a consultant to the Chancellor’s office, we have been looking for answers to the question of what will happen if this happens,” he said on September 4 Reuters.
The German Chancellor recalled that the country was actively replenishing its gas storage facilities. They will continue to fill up next winter.
Scholz also announced financial support for the Germans in the amount of €65 billion due to rising inflation.
On August 31, information appeared that in Dresden, from September 1, outdoor lighting in public buildings will be switched off from 22:00 in order to save energy.
Earlier, on August 24, German Vice-Chancellor and Economics Minister Robert Habek said that with the onset of autumn in Germany, public buildings would be heated to 19 degrees for the sake of economy. He noted that the energy situation in the country remains tense, so the German Cabinet is introducing new measures that will help save energy.
On August 17, Bloomberg reported that if gas supplies from the Russian Federation to Germany are cut off, the country will have to face a serious shortage of energy resources for the coming winter. According to the agency, with this outcome, the stocks will only last for three months.
Prior to this, on August 15, the head of the German Left Party, Martin Schirdevan, predicted protests in the country by autumn due to rising energy prices and rising inflation.
