Why did they change Darrin in “Bewitched”?
Years before he became famous for “Bewitched”, York was part of the cast of the film “They came to Sanity”, in which he suffered an accident that left him with terrible lower back pain. When he moved on to the fiction of the flexible-nosed witch, his problems did not stop.
The production team was very attentive to him and even helped him by having certain considerations for him; however, the situation became unmanageable. According to a report in The New York Times, Dick’s old back injury, including his over-reliance on painkillers, led to his signing his letter of resignation.
His replacement came Dick Sargent, who continued in the role until 1972. This change of protagonist had not been seen before in Hollywood, which is why this kind of phenomenon was baptized as Darrin Syndrome.
Of course, this impasse for York did not stop there. The actor plunged into a chain of misfortunes, until his death was confirmed on February 20, 1992.
