The new place, which opened its doors this Thursday with great expectation, allows you to have a drink while enjoying the company of a group of felines
At first glance, it looks like just another cafeteria. But at La Gatera, in addition to a coffee or a cupcake, customers can enjoy a session of purring and feline caresses. Because this Thursday the first Cat-Café in the Region of Murcia opened its doors, located on Calle Vara de Rey in the capital. In this space, the cats are the protagonists, since five kittens ‘live’ within its walls, receiving the clients of this establishment. In addition, this place also gives these felines a second chance, since they are all part of a protector and this cafeteria is a foster home, so they can be adopted by customers.
This project arises from the “love” of its founder, Isabel López, “for animals and for hospitality.” In fact, she trained as a veterinary assistant and worked as a waitress at the same time. So, as she confesses, “it’s a way of bringing her two passions together.”
The operation is very simple, customers come to the premises, where cats are king, to be able to have a drink and interact with the animals and, incidentally, with the rest of the attendees. “If they are animal lovers and especially cats, they will fall in love with the environment,” says López. This type of business that now lands in Murcia is very popular in countries like Japan or Taiwan, however, in our country it only existed in cities like Madrid or Barcelona, so its opening represents a revolution in the capital and throughout the Region. .
So far, the place has five kittens that accompany customers during their stay. ‘Robin’, ‘Batman’, ‘Boletus’, ‘Mowgli’ and ‘Bella’ walk around the cafeteria, approaching customers to play with them and pet them, a very adorable sight.
One of the peculiarities that this place has, compared to the majority that already exist in the rest of the world, is that it does not have a maximum length of stay, something that its owner considers “takes back a bit”, so in this cafeteria that ‘norm’ is not valid, so that customers “focus on enjoying the cats and not on the weather”.
A risky business idea that was received with open arms at the last edition of the Murcia Manga Fair, when Lopéz opened a ‘crowdfunding’ that unfortunately “did not have the expected success.” However, despite the adversities, the project managed to move forward, and that experience helped him “to meet the people who are interested in this type of premises.”
The reception it received on its opening day was overwhelming, as cat lovers filled the premises and some had to queue to enter. The first customers assured that it is something “innovative” and “that they had been waiting for a long time”. “Seeing the kittens hanging around here is very funny,” acknowledged one of the attendees.
