BYD, which is increasingly becoming a major electric vehicle manufacturer in China and around the world, has announced a significant recall of approximately 97,000 cars due to a manufacturing defect that could pose a fire risk. The State Administration for Market Regulation, the market regulatory authority more conveniently known as SAMR, has made the situation known by making it known that the problem concerns a steering control unit.
Details of the recall
The vehicles affected by this recall are the models Dolphin And Yuan Plusall produced between November 2022 and December 2023. SAMR said BYD will ask dealers to install a physical repair in the recalled cars: it was not specified at this time whether some of these vehicles were exported outside of China.
Sales and impact on BYD
The Dolphin and Yuan Plus models were very successful in 2023, accounting for 26% of BYD’s total sales, which amounted to approximately 3 million vehicles. This situation is particularly significant since the recall of pure electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids is a rare event for BYDwhich has seen rapid growth and established itself as the world’s largest EV seller. In fact, before this recall, the Chinese giant had already recalled a limited number of Tang plug-in hybrid vehicles in 2022 due to a defect in the battery pack, which could also cause fires.
