“Pataclaun” was a boom for making humor with social criticism. Now, “Asu mare” takes advantage of the easy joke to make people laugh. Because? Exclusively for La República, Bedoya explains reality.
Ricardo Bedoya, famous Peruvian film critic and image of the mythical program “El placer de los ojos” during the more than 20 years that it was on the air, prefers to use the term “Peruvian cinemas” to refer to the set of national films. This is because each project configures a particular case that should not enter into a generalization. However, the type of comedy that has been hitting commercial theaters lately seems to follow the same line as “Asu mare” and the spin-off “Friends” has received criticism from the public for abusing an easy laugh equation to wrest laughter from the audience. public.

“Asu mare”, the type of comedy that packs the theaters
More than 20 years ago, “Pataclaun” revolutionized local TV by proposing humor supported by social criticism. But you don’t do that kind of comedy anymore, why has there been this change? In Bedoya’s point of view, evolution responds to a very simple reason.
“Because the format that is being done a bit for the comedies that arrive it is a format that is recipe book. Variations are being made on what is workingbut we are in a world of algorithms”, he began in an interview with La República.
“So, things begin to be manufactured not according to certain facts that we want to see represented, but to what responds to the taste of a majority public that is measured by algorithms”, he added.
Of course, the fact that a film is a box office hit does not mean that it is of good quality. “Do you know what is at odds with quality? The tackiness; when one wants to be profitable by being tacky, when one wants to be profitable by appealing to ease, then there is going to be nonsense”, explained the Peruvian critic.
“Asu mare”, a saga that has gone from bad to worse
The “Asu mare” franchise began in 2013. The first installment was followed by two sequels and in 2023 the spin-off “Los amigos” was released. Despite the millionaire attendance that it generates in movie theaters, the reception of a large part of the public has railed against the script and the performances. Even so, it is salvageable that it has become a product that generates profits.
“The first ‘Asu mare’ seems to me to be a film that was not null. I thought it was very irregular, but I think it was in tune with the spirit of the time. I think it was done with a lot of professionalism and that it had been done to reach a market with very clear intentions and it succeeded,” Bedoya said in conversation with this outlet.
But the next releases in the saga were denting the result. “The following three films have been in decline and I think that this last one (“The friends”) is the most failed.”
