Three out of four private hospitals in the state of São Paulo report that the average waiting time in urgent and emergency care is more than two hours for patients with suspected covid-19 or flu syndrome. The data show the pressure caused by the explosion of infections by the coronavirus with the advancement of the Ômicron variant, which is more transmissible.
The survey was carried out by the Union of Hospitals, Clinics and Laboratories of the State of São Paulo (SindHosp), with 81 establishments in the capital and in the countryside between January 12th and 19th. Four out of ten hospitals indicate a wait of two to three hours, and 32% report that they have lines longer than three hours.
All hospitals report that there has been an increase in emergency care in the last 15 days for patients with covid-19. In 60% of cases, the demand for this type of service more than doubled. With a large part of the population vaccinated and, at the same time, high transmissibility of the virus, the tendency is to pressure precisely in emergency care – the gateway to hospitals.
In the first 19 days of the year alone, the number of cases of covid in Brazil (1,135,488) is equivalent to 30% of the total number of confirmed cases throughout the second half of 2021 (3,726,209). The number of cases in the first 19 days of the year already exceeds by 132% the total number of confirmed cases in the last quarter of 2021 (859,596).
Srag
Bulletin of the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (Fiocruz) released this Friday, 21, pointed to a strong growth in cases of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome. In 22 units of the Federation, there was at least one health macro-region with a level of weekly SARS cases classified as very high or extremely high, according to the Fiocruz survey. In relation to capitals, 24 of the 27 show signs of growth in the trend of the last six weeks.
People with symptoms of covid-19 crowd hospitals for tests to detect the disease, consultations and to obtain a medical certificate. Most cases are mild, thanks to vaccination. However, the very high number of infected people also inevitably leads to an increase in the volume of hospitalizations, in clinical beds or Intensive Care Units (ICU), as shown by data from SindHosp.
In more than a third of private hospitals in São Paulo, the ICU occupancy rate exceeds 81%. The occupancy of clinical beds reaches the same percentage in a quarter of the establishments.
According to the survey, almost half of patients with covid-19 admitted to ICUs are between 60 and 79 years old, and 34% are between 30 and 50 years old. In urgent and emergency services, half of the patients are between 30 and 50 years old, and 30.5% are between 60 and 79 years old.
In a press release, doctor Francisco Balestrin, president of SindHosp, said that the downward trend in ICU admissions, seen since October last year, reversed shortly after the holiday season. The situation, he says, sparks an alert.
Managers throughout Brazil are already mobilizing to deal with the increase in demand. The National Council of Health Secretaries (Conass) sent a letter to the Minister of Health, Marcelo Queiroga, arguing that there may be increased pressure on the hospital network.
In addition to the increase in patients, private hospitals are dealing with other problems. Among them, the removal of employees (38% of hospitals) and the lack of tests for covid-19 (20%). Most establishments have difficulty replacing tests that detect the disease.
Test
according to Estadão showed, the scarcity of tests has even led public networks to restrict access to testing. This week, the City of São Paulo, for example, reported that it only has tests for another 15 days and that, therefore, it would give preference to cases considered priority, such as pregnant women, patients with comorbidity and homeless people.
