Kiev – The long-dreaded horror scenario has come to pass: the war in Ukraine began on Thursday night, and there is a state of emergency in Eastern Europe. Russian President Vladimir Putin had announced a “military operation” and ordered attacks on the neighboring country.
In the early morning, the first violent explosions could be heard in the capital Kiev and the port cities of Mariupol and Odessa. The Ukrainian border guard reported artillery fire on both the border with Russia and Belarus. According to their own statements, the Russian armed forces completely disabled the country’s air defense system during the invasion of Ukraine. The Defense Ministry announced on Thursday in Moscow that the bases of the Ukrainian air force had been put out of action with “precision-guided ammunition”. The Ukrainian soldiers did not offer any resistance to the Russian military, it was said.
