NHL bankruptcies for Seider and Sturm
Dusseldorf While most Europeans are asleep, the North American professional leagues are buzzing. What Happened That Night in American Football, Basketball, and Ice Hockey.
Ice Hockey: Seider scores in Red Wings defeat in eighth game in a row
The German ice hockey professional Moritz Seider from the Detroit Red Wings has caught up with a club legend in his first NHL season. In the 1: 3 (0: 0, 1: 1, 0: 2) at the Tampa Bay Lightning on Friday evening (local time), the 19-year-old defender was involved in at least one goal in the eighth game in a row – Hall last managed that in 1983 -of-famer Steve Yzerman in his first season in the NHL for Detroit.
Seider prepared Robby Fabbri’s interim equalizer against the champions of the past two years with a shot that Lightning goalkeeper Brian Elliott only deflected. It was already the 36th assist of the season for Seider, who clearly leads the league’s rookies in these statistics. The defender also showed a strong performance with three shots, five hits and a block as well as the longest ice time of all field players. Seider is considered a contender for the Calder Memorial Trophy for the best rookie of the year, an award that has never been won by a German.
Meanwhile, the Red Wings are increasingly losing sight of the playoffs. Detroit is already 13 points behind the Washington Capitals, who are currently the last wild-card spot in the Eastern Conference.
Nico Sturm conceded the seventh loss in the past nine games with the Minnesota Wild in a 4-5 loss at the Buffalo Sabers. The Wild are currently in third place in the Central Division in the Western Conference and are still on course for the playoffs, but only three points ahead of a non-playoff place.
Basketball: Defending champion Milwaukee wins top NBA game in Chicago
Led by superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo, defending champions Milwaukee Bucks won the top game at the Chicago Bulls in the North American professional basketball league NBA. Milwaukee won 118-112 on Friday night (local time) thanks to a strong final quarter.
Antetokounmpo had 34 points and 16 rebounds, while Jrue Holiday scored 10 of his 26 points in the last five minutes. The Bucks turned the game around in the closing stages and are now leading the Central Division – level with the Bulls, who have lost all eight games of the season to the three other top teams in the Eastern Conference. The Miami Heat (42-22) lead ahead of the Philadelphia 76ers (39-23) and the Bucks and Bulls (39-25 each).
The Orlando Magic, meanwhile, are no longer the team with the worst record in the league after their third win in the past four games. Franz Wagner contributed 11 points, seven rebounds and five assists to the Toronto Raptors’ 103-97 win but hit only five of his 14 throws. The German national player Isaac Bonga returned to the Raptors for the first time since the end of January for a short assignment in the NBA. Franz Wagner’s older brother Moritz, on the other hand, is still absent from the Magic because of a rib injury.
Dennis Schröder also had to watch injured as his Houston Rockets conceded their twelfth loss in a row. The Rockets are now the worst team in the league after 101-116 at the Denver Nuggets.
