A hedgehog charity is horrified by a terrible incident: students apparently didn’t use a football, but instead used a hedgehog as a ball.
Kassel – Animal protection is apparently not important to everyone. At least that’s what this incident that happened at a German school shows. As the Igelhilfe Herford-OWL eV announced on Facebook, a hedgehog is currently being intensively cared for after it was misused as a ball by children.
Fortunately, the animal was saved, but according to the organization, the school management is not drawing any consequences from the animal cruelty. A married couple also has to face the accusation about the use of listening to white doves after a wedding in Kassel.
“The treatment for this is lengthy”: Aid organization shares the ordeal of the hedgehog Joy
In a long Facebook post, the Igelhilfe Herford-OWL eV shared the sad fate of the hedgehog girl Joy. According to the organization, the hedgehog was rescued by a finder during the soccer game, while other adults paid no attention to the unusual ball.
As a result of the children’s kicks, the poor hedgehog has to contend with not only severe trauma, but also stubborn fungal infestation and broken bones. However, the collarbone was not only broken, but even displaced. “She has been in intensive care for almost 6 weeks and is receiving time-consuming and loving individual care,” says the Facebook post.
During the lengthy recovery, the animal even has to undergo an operation. However, hedgehogs seem to be tough. A hedgehog recently even survived Fall into a chimney 10 meters high.
After the animal had to suffer so much, the organization apparently also contacted the school management so that the children could be asked about their behavior. “Unfortunately, contrary to our expectations, the reaction of the school management was very negative,” said Igelhilfe.
“It’s shocking what happened to the poor animal”: Other Facebook users are horrified
The post has now received almost 200 comments and has been shared 274 times. Facebook users agree that such behavior should not be tolerated and regret the suffering that Joy the hedgehog is subjected to. “It’s shocking what happened to the poor animal… shocking that the school management reacted so negatively,” writes one user. Another comment also criticizes the ignorance of the school management: “If these are the parents and educators of today, then good night.”
The fate of the hedgehog girl has also motivated other people to comment on whether legal action can even be taken against the perpetrators. “Can’t you report this, animal cruelty? “That’s really terrible,” says one comment.
Hedgehogs are protected by the Federal Nature Conservation Act: This is what you should pay attention to if you find a hedgehog
Populations of the native brown-breasted hedgehog have declined significantly in recent years. According to that Association for Nature Conservation in Bayer eV, The animals are even on the red list of mammals in Bavaria and are protected by the Federal Nature Conservation Act. Again Animal Welfare Association reported, proven animal cruelty can even be punished with a maximum penalty of up to three years in prison.
If you find a hedgehog, the organization recommends that you do not wait and see a hedgehog station or a veterinarian who specializes in such animals. You can recognize hedgehogs in need of help if the hedgehogs look injured, malnourished or sick. An indication to seek help is if you discover an active hedgehog after the onset of winter. A Facebook user recently discovered an unusual animal in his own garden. (cg)
