LeBron James sets NBA season record in Lakers win
Dusseldorf While most Europeans are asleep, the North American professional leagues are buzzing. What Happened That Night in American Football, Basketball, and Ice Hockey.
Basketball: LeBron James shines with 56 points
Basketball superstar LeBron James led the Los Angeles Lakers to a 124-116 (62-67) win over the Golden State Warriors with 56 points. The 37-year-old equaled Trae Young’s NBA season record on Saturday (local time) and helped the Lakers to their first win after four consecutive losses.
James scored 16 points in the final nine minutes of the game alone, hitting three three-pointers in 76 seconds. With 34 seconds to go, James served his teammate Carmelo Anthony for the ultimately decisive three-pointer. The Lakers turned the game around with a 35-22 in the final quarter.
“There really are no words for that. An unbelievable performance by the best player ever,” Lakers coach Frank Vogel said of James’ performance. “He was phenomenal,” said Anthony. It was the third-highest point tally in James’ 19-year NBA career, his best is 61 points.
Basketball: Wagner brothers go bankrupt
The brothers Franz and Moritz Wagner suffered a 96:124 (45:68) defeat at the Memphis Grizzlies with the Orlando Magic. Due to a weak second quarter, the guests were 23 points behind at the break. Moritz Wagner scored his first so-called double-double of the season with 17 points and eleven rebounds and achieved double-digit values in two statistics. The 24-year-old returned to the Orlando squad after recovering from a rib injury and missing nine games. Franz Wagner got 15 points.
Ice hockey: Defeats for Draisaitl, Stützle and Seider
The German ice hockey professional Leon Draisaitl left the ice with the Edmonton Oilers in the second game in a row as a loser. On Saturday (local time), the Oilers suffered a 5-2 (1-2, 1-1, 0-2) home loss in the NHL to the weakest team in the Eastern Conference, the Montreal Canadiens.
Draisaitl was there with an assist in the 1-1 equalization in the first period. Germany’s athlete of the year 2020 with 79 points in the scorer list caught up with teammate Connor McDavid, both of whom now share first place. The Oilers conceded two hits in the final half.
Tim Stützle and the Ottawa Senators had to admit defeat to the Arizona Coyotes 5:8 (0:2, 3:2, 2:4) despite a furious race to catch up. The Senators trailed 4-0 midway through the second period and then scored five goals in a row. Stützle was directly involved in two goals, which the 20-year-old managed for the second time this season. But the Coyotes scored four goals in a row in the final period. Arizona’s Nick Schmaltz boasted two goals and five assists. For the first time in a decade, a player in the NHL scored seven points in a game.
Thomas Greiss and Moritz Seider also suffered a defeat with the Detroit Red Wings on Saturday: the German duo lost 2:6 (1:3, 0:3, 1:0) to the Florida Panthers. After Greiss conceded the fifth goal in the middle period, the goalie made room for Alex Nedeljkovic in the goal.
