Yesterday, the match between Atlético de Madrid and Real Madrid was going to be played in the fiefdom of the mattresses, the Wanda Metropolitano. The merengue team was going to win this match by two goals to nil, with goals from Valverde and Rodrygo, this means that the merengues are ranked first in the league championship.
Like any Madrid derby, it was going to be lived with tension due to the maximum rivalry between the teams in the Spanish capital. The week before the match stood out for the crop field planted towards Vinicius, a Brazilian player for Real Madrid. This is due to Koke’s statements in which he criticized the way of celebrating goals, the Real Madrid player celebrates goals by dancing. “Weeks ago they began to criminalize my dances. They are dances to celebrate the cultural diversity of the world. Accept it, respect it. I’m not going to stop,” said Vinicius.
The tension was chewed in the moments before the match, corresponding to matchday six of LaLiga, when a sector of Atlético de Madrid ultras began to sing some unfortunate racist chants: “You’re a monkey, Vinícius you’re a monkey.” Atlético de Madrid had to intervene and through social networks they published a message condemning what happened “Encourage Atleti with passion and with respect towards the rival”.
During the game the tension was going to continue and every time the Brazilian came into contact with the ball he received a strong whistle from the mattress stands. Vinícius did not manage to score but he went to celebrate with his compatriot Rodrygo, with whom he danced. This celebration caused both players to receive insults, the public address system of Atlético had to intervene, asking that objects not be thrown on the green.
After the match, Matheus Cunha, an Atlético de Madrid player, was going to explode on social networks, coming out in defense of Vinícius. Cunha assured after the derby that Vinícius’ message prior to the match was not referring to Koke, he was referring to a television commentator who expressed himself in a racist manner.
Violence and racism have no place in society. From 90min we want to condemn not only what happened this weekend, but also all the racist episodes that take place on soccer fields. It is a pity that the “fans” -to categorize them in some way- spend their time directing harassment of this nature. It must be said that these groups are a minority, but that minority unfortunately stains the image of those followers who are only going to cheer on their team.
Enough of racism.
