Switzerland will not treat those injured in the Ukraine war in its hospitals. The government in Bern justified this on Monday with the country’s neutrality, one of the cornerstones of Swiss foreign policy. “With its aid and humanitarian commitment, Switzerland is fundamentally providing a qualitative better and more effective help on site than if the patients were admitted in Switzerland‘ the Foreign Ministry said.
According to information from the Swiss “Tag Anzeiger”, several cantons had previously responded favorably to NATO’s request for care for the injured from Ukraine. The government prevented admission with its decision.
Bern is relying on the support of Ukrainian hospitals, the Foreign Ministry said. The clinics in Lviv, Chernihiv and Sumy have been provided with treatment equipment and training for physiotherapists.
Shortly after the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Switzerland decided to join the European Union’s sanctions against Moscow. But Switzerland insists on its principle of strict military neutrality: last month the country prohibited the delivery of Swiss war material via third countries to Ukraine.
