Ukraine has begun evacuating the city of Irpin in Kiev province, where about 3,000 civilians have already received assistance, according to the country’s State Emergency Service.
The evacuation of the city, located northwest of the Ukrainian capital and which has almost 43,000 inhabitants, comes after days of intense attacks by Russian troops and the imposition of various obstacles to the passage of the population. The only way out is across a bridge that has been destroyed. There are reports of waiting three hours to make the crossing. The State Emergency Service provides medical assistance when needed.
Last Sunday (6), four members of a family died while leaving the city, when Russian forces fired on civilians. According to the mayor, Oleksandr Markushin, there were a total of eight dead.
The municipal chief executive, however, denied that the city is fully occupied by the Russians and said that fighting was still taking place in a part that was taken. Despite the attacks, the police and army managed to evacuate 200 people from the conflict region, including 50 children and one wounded person, according to Ukraine’s Interior Ministry.
