Former president and current presidential candidate for the Republican Party Donald Trump said during a campaign rally this Sunday (12), in New Jersey, that he will deport foreign students who participated in protests against Israel.
“When I am president, we will not allow our colleges to be taken over by violent radicals. If you come from another country and try to bring jihadism, anti-Americanism, or anti-Semitism to campuses, we will deport you immediately. You will be out of that school”, said the politician.
The statement follows a move by Republicans in Congress, who sent a letter to the State Department and the Department of Homeland Security demanding the deportation of foreign students who, they say, “participated in demonstrations in support of Hamas” at universities in recent days.
“We are concerned about recent reports of demonstrations on U.S. soil, including student demonstrations in support of Hamas, a designated foreign terrorist organization, in the wake of the shocking terrorist attacks on our closest Middle East ally, Israel. These demonstrations potentially involve student visa holders”, says an excerpt from the document addressed to the Secretaries of State, Antony Blinken, and of Homeland Security, Alejandro Mayorkas.
Trump also criticized President Joe Biden for “abandoning” Israel by temporarily halting the shipment of heavy weapons. “This week, he [Biden] announced it would suspend arms shipments to Israel as they fight to eradicate Hamas terrorists in Gaza. This was shocking to hear, especially when there are still American hostages being held by Hamas. Biden’s actions are one of the worst betrayals of an American ally in our country’s history,” he said.
After that, Trump declared his support for Israel’s right to “win the war against terrorism” in the Middle East. The former US president and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu demonstrated a strong diplomatic relationship.
Currently, the Biden administration is facing disagreements with Tel Aviv due to a special Israeli operation in the city of Rafah, considered Hamas’ last major stronghold in Gaza. The American president stated last week that the action represented a “red line” for his administration, however Netanyahu said that the country will continue its plan to completely eliminate Hamas from the Palestinian enclave “so that October 7th will never happen again.”
