The Brindisi Prosecutor’s Office has ordered the preventive seizure of the conveyor belt and the plant where the tragedy occurred.
Another hard blow for Italian workers, another work accident. A few days before May 1st, the day in which we not only celebrate and have holidays but, above all, statistics are reeled off, workers’ rights and conditions are discussed, yet another tragedy. The drama took place last night in Brindisi, where a worker lost his life while carrying out maintenance work.
The victim is Vincenzo Valente, 46 years old from Latiano, who was working on a conveyor belt in the sugar factory located in the industrial area on the road to Fiume Piccolo. The 118 rescuers, firefighters and Spresal inspectors immediately intervened on site.
The exact dynamics of the accident and any responsibilities are still to be clarified. Investigations are underway to ascertain what happened and whether there was any negligence. The first reconstructions hypothesize that a conveyor belt has severely torn one arm of the worker, causing extensive bleeding. The victim’s colleagues immediately alerted the emergency services who, after providing initial treatment on site, transported the man urgently to the Perrino hospital in Brindisi. The situation was immediately clear to everyone: it was a very serious haemorrhage.
Unfortunately, despite the timely interventions of the doctors, the worker did not survive and died shortly after arriving at the hospital. The body is now in the morgue. The Brindisi Prosecutor’s Office has opened an investigation to shed light on what happened and ordered the preventive seizure of the conveyor belt and the plant where the tragedy occurred.
The worker worked for a company outside the sugar factory. The factory, active in Brindisi since 2019, produces around 180 thousand tonnes of sugar per year and employs more than 90 workers. The death of Vincenzo Valente represents yet another workplace tragedy in Italy. Just a few days ago, two people lost their lives in similar accidents in the province of Naples: a 57-year-old who fell from the third floor of a building under renovation and a 60-year-old who died on a construction site.
