Tinkoff Magazine: the most popular date of birth in Russia is January 1
The most popular date of birth in Russia is January 1, as determined by Tinkoff Magazine experts. Experts analyzed dates of birth over 70 years and found out the most popular dates of birth registration based on anonymized data of more than 40 million Tinkoff Bank clients. The results of the study were at the disposal of Lenta.ru.
According to analysts, the most common and rare dates of birth are associated with registration features. Most often, Russians celebrate their birthdays on January 1, 2 and in the first days of the months from February to September. Also, more often than average, children are registered on “round” dates and memorable dates, for example, on the tenth day or February 23rd. Less common, except on February 29, on the days from December 27 to 31.
Features of birth registration change over time: in the Soviet years there were abnormally many people born on January 1, on holidays and memorable dates, and among those born in the 2000s there were anomalously few
Experts note that in the Soviet years, due to the rules of conscription into the army, errors in registering births, as well as the fact that the real data could simply be unknown, many children had their date of birth recorded arbitrarily – January 1 or another first date.
At the same time, among those born after 2005, the share of those born on January 1 is less than average. There are also fewer people born on May holidays, March 8, February 23 and other holidays. Perhaps caesarean sections are performed less frequently these days, and registry offices after the holidays enter the date of registration in the documents, rather than the actual date of birth.
Fertility seasonality since 1950
According to analysts, in 1950-1974, children were more often born in the first half of the year – from January to April. The most common dates of birth during this period: January 1 and 2, January 3, February 1, February 23, March 1, March 8, April 1, May 1, August 8, the first days of other months, November 7. The rarest: February 29, days from December 21 to 31, October 31.
In 1975-1999, the peak of births was from May to July. The most common birthdays during this period are: January 1, 3, 6, 7, 8, February 23, May 5, June 10 and 20, June 25. The rarest: February 29, August 9 and 11, October 19, 24 and 31, November 7 and 9, December 13, December 28-31.
And in 2000-2014, the peak birth rate shifts to July-September. Most often, Russians born during this period celebrate their birthdays on August 1 and June 1, June 20, July 10, July 24 and 25, August 8, September 25 and 26, and October 1. Least common: February 29, December 31, January 2 and 7, March 8, February 23, May 1, 2 and 9, April 11.
