The Today is the Day highlights, this week from November 21st to 27th, the death of Argentine star Diego Maradona, one of the greatest in the history of world football. The player died on November 25, 2020. Another relevant fact that will be remembered in the coming days is the registration, in the National Library, of samba by phone, that happened 105 years ago, on the 27th of November. This is considered the first samba to be recorded in Brazil.
Goodbye to “Dios”
A year ago, on November 25, 2020, Maradona passed away. Owner of an unparalleled ability, the Argentine was born in October 1960 and has collected many glories in his career. His name is always remembered in discussions about who was the best player of all time – rivaling the Brazilian Pelé. But, outside the field, Maradona’s life was full of controversies.
Maradona was very significant as a player: he won a World Cup in 1986 and became the idol of clubs like Boca Juniors, Napoli and Barcelona. He is revered in his native country, where he is known as El Dios (the God) and El Pibe de Oro (The golden boy). However, drug addiction, a problem that has dragged on his life since his youth, meant that he was barred from the 1994 World Cup when he was caught in an anti-doping test.
Maradona didn’t resist to a cardiorespiratory arrest suffered on November 25, 2020. He was at the home of one of his daughters in Buenos Aires and had the medical support of some ambulances. The ace had left when he was 60 years old. All over the world, fans and admirers mourned his death and still remember his great deeds on the field.

On the same day, November 25, 2016, the former president and leader of the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro, passed away. The country’s commander for nearly 60 years, Fidel was a controversial figure. For many, he was a hero against US imperialist forces. For others, Fidel was a dictator who hindered the island of Cuba’s progress and oppressed its people. However, the only certainty is that the Cuban revolutionary was one of the greatest political figures of the 20th century.
30 years without Freddie Mercury
Another game that took place these days was that of singer, pianist and composer Freddie Mercury. Owner of one of the best known voices in the world, the leader of the band Queen died at the age of 45, on November 24, 1991, exactly 30 years ago. the first samba
On November 27, 1916, the song was registered at the National Library by thelephone (in the original spelling), considered the first samba to be recorded in Brazil. With controversies regarding its authorship, by phone is signed by Ernesto dos Santos, better known as Donga, and by journalist Mauro Almeida.
The song’s lyrics contain an irony regarding the action of Rio de Janeiro police officers at the time, who were colluding with the game of roulette, even though it was illegal. Donga, fearing retaliation, recorded another letter without citing the police. by phone was created in a Candomblé terreiro, known as Casa da Tia Ciata, and reached a great level of success at the Rio de Janeiro Carnival of 1917. One more gold from Adhemar
Adhemar Ferreira da Silva was a Brazilian athlete twice Olympic champion in the triple jump. A historic achievement. His second gold medal, won at the Melbourne Olympics in 1956, turns 65 on November 27, 2021. Adhemar was born in São Paulo, in 1927 and, coming from a working-class neighborhood, conquered the world with the sport. He died in 2001, aged 73.
In addition to winning the Olympic bi-championship in the 1952 and 1956 Olympics, Adhemar broke the world record for the triple jump five times and is known as the inventor of the Olympic lap, so practiced in the sport. Recently, this Brazilian sports legend was honored by receiving the plaque of World Heritage of World Athletics, only athlete in South America to be recognized in this way (read more in the article of Brazil Agency).
70 years of a muse
On November 27, actress Vera Fischer celebrates 70 years of life. Vera is a descendant of a German family and started her career as a model. In 1969, she was elected Miss Brazil. He migrated to cinema in 1972 and to television, starring in soap operas from 1977 onwards, in the soap opera Magic mirror. His last television role was in 2018.
In October 2020, she gave an interview to the program no censorship gives TV Brazil. In the conversation, she said she has been dedicated to social media, with movie and series tips. In this milieu, despite not being familiar with the technology before, she was quite successful with her irreverence. The change came, according to her, on account of the pandemic.
