Kryuchkov doubted that the viruses found in ticks pose a threat to people
In order for new viruses found in mosquitoes and ticks to pose a real danger to humans, they must meet many criteria, said immunologist Nikolai Kryuchkov. He shared this assessment in a conversation with Lenta.ru.
“It is not clear from the message from Rospotrebnadzor what exactly is meant. Or these are a dozen new viruses that have not previously been detected in mosquitoes and ticks. If this is so, then it is not at all a fact that all of them are pathogenic for humans. Or we may be talking about new strains of viruses that were previously discovered, or new subvariants,” Kryuchkov said.
[Найденные в комарах и клещах новые вирусы] – this is not the same as a dozen new pathogenic viruses were discovered that ticks and mosquitoes had never previously transmitted
According to the immunologist, the mere fact of the presence of viruses does not indicate that they are an infection in mosquitoes and ticks.
“These insects could catch the virus, but it does not develop in them and does not infect them. Even if this is not the case, and some of these viruses infect insects, then it is absolutely not a fact that these insects can transmit this infection to humans. And the third point is that if these viruses can enter the human body through the salivary glands, for example, or through the blood, then it is not at all a fact that their quantity will be sufficient for infection and that they will be able to infect a person. That is, there are a lot of “buts” here,” he concluded.
