Tobacconists exempted from the POS: the merchant no longer has the obligation to accept card or debit card payments for tobaccos and stamps or postal values
On the occasion of the T2000 of Catania, the tobacconists’ fair organized by the FIT, the announcement has arrived that these businesses no longer have to be subject to the obligation of payment with POS. Specifically, the freedom is given not to accept credit or debit cards for the purchase of tobacco, revenue stamps and postage stamps. To buy cigarettes, therefore, it will be good to have cash in your wallet.
The confirmation arrived on 24 October with the publication of the decision of the Director of the Customs and Monopoly Agency, Marcello Minenna. Since 2012 the tobacconists had opposed the obligation of the POS, emphasizing the fact that for tobaccos and stamped values the traceability was already guaranteed upstream but above all for a question of very low profit margins on these products further reduced with online transactions.
Tobacconists exempted from the POS: what the law provides
From 1 July 2022, all merchants and freelancers are required to have a POS to accept electronic payments with credit and debit cards, debit cards and apps. The goal is to combat tax evasion. In the event that the shopkeeper does not have the POS, a penalty of 30 euros plus 4% of the transaction value. The obligation applies not only to traders but also to professionals such as doctors, taxi drivers and others.
