President Petro mourned his passing. The circumstances of how it happened are unknown.

“A young man who wanted to be a revolutionary has died. The revolution is Peace,” wrote President Gustavo Petro to lament the departure of Alexis Castillo, 24, a Colombian who was fighting in Donbas.

According to reports, Castillo lived in Spain before going to the troubled Ukrainian region of Donbas. He became an international brigade member in 2014, for which he traveled to the region.

There is an armed conflict between the separatist forces and the Ukrainian Army that has left more than ten thousand soldiers dead, according to figures from international organizations.

“I traveled to protect the population of Donbas from all the madness they were doing, which was to bomb the city,” he explained to the Russian state media ‘RT’ in a past interview.

The young Castillo lived in Spanish territory since he was 16 years old. As he told the local media ‘El Confidencial’, he was fighting with separatist and pro-Russian militias in the Donbas war, because he was against Western policies.

“I am a soldier here. Normally, if we are not doing other things, we train. We perform the functions of any army, only in a conflict situation,” he said.
