The Organization of Consumers and Users carries out a comparative study of 151 of these products
When you think of having a light and healthy snack, you may opt for the popular cereal pancakes. These types of pancakes are usually made of corn or rice, but there are also other cereals in their composition. Others have more appetizing flavors such as pancakes that have chocolate. In this way, this light snack becomes a heavier snack than it seems. The Organization of Consumers and Users (OCU) has studied the ingredients and nutritional composition of these products so that you can choose knowing what you eat.
After this analysis, the OCU has launched a nutritional warning on these popular puffed pancakes that are sold in any supermarket. The conclusion reached by the OCU is that these pancakes do not help lose weight, as many users think, so it advises choosing other healthier foods as an appetizer. To reach this conclusion, the OCU has carried out a comparative study of 151 rice and corn pancakes, mainly, but also oats, spelled and wheat.
They do not help lose weight
The organization claims that these pancakes do not help you lose weight, especially when it comes to flavored or chocolate pancakes. The attractiveness of simple cereal pancakes, without flavors or chocolate, lies in the few calories per unit, since they are products with little weight and a lot of air.
However, they explain that “transferring them to 100 grams, the calories are already noticeable: 383 kcal, compared to the 240 kcal of the same amount of white bread or the 251 kcal of wholemeal bread,” they point out from the OCU. In addition, they state that pancakes with flavors or with chocolate have an even higher caloric intake: 443 kcal and 471 kcal, respectively.
Therefore, from the OCU it is recommended to choose other healthier foods for snacks, especially in the case of the little ones. It is recommended for them to eat fruit, natural nuts or sandwiches of wholemeal bread with olive oil, tomato, ham or cheese as an appetizer. Lastly, the OCU considers that brands must include more complete information on their labeling and that it informs of the origin of the ingredients used.
