Fans of horror games eagerly await the release date of The Callisto Protocol in December, and recently PCGamesN spoke with the team of Striking Distance Studios of the influences and inspirations of the next title and what it means to design such terrifying experiences.
PCGamesN spoke with Chris Stone, Creative Director of Striking Distance Studios and former Animation Director of Dead Space, to understand where the team looks most closely for inspiration. Stone cites the horror game series Silent Hill and Resident Evil as “obvious influences“but states that Striking Distance Studios also takes”a lot of inspiration from films like The Thing and Event Horizon“. Stone cites French and Korean cinema as prominent influences, stating that both are.”really improving their game in the horror genre“.
Furthermore, Stone states that “we found ourselves looking at many examples of horror in real life. While the research was far less fun, it was some of the most memorable and valuable content for creating lifelike images and experiences“.
Of course, there’s one particular inspiration that everyone looks to, given the involvement of Stone, Glen Schofield and Steve Papoutsis, who all worked on Dead Space.
“Of course, our creative footprints are present throughout the game“says Stone.”All the ideas that we had years ago about Dead Space that we couldn’t make because the hardware couldn’t keep up, now we can make them happen and it’s great“. EA’s Dead Space remake will be out in January, but Stone says the Striking Distance Studios team doesn’t care.”I have distributed nearly 30 titles in my career and we have always had competition. We just put ourselves in the players’ shoes and try to make the best game possible“.
