Future variants of the coronavirus may be more contagious than Omicron. This was stated on Sunday, January 23, by World Health Organization (WHO) expert Maria van Kerkhove during her speech on the Science in Five Minutes program broadcast on social networks.
“The more this virus circulates, the more opportunities it has to change. Omicron will not be the last option we will discuss, and there is a very real possibility that there will be options in the future that are of concern,” the expert noted.
Kerkhove drew attention to the fact that the properties of new strains of coronavirus are currently unknown. At the same time, as the specialist clarified, they will be the most contagious.
At the same time, the expert assured that, despite more and more information that Omicron-strain leads on average to a less severe course of the disease than Delta, Omicron is still dangerous.
As Ekaterina Vertieva, an oncodermatologist, noted on January 22, the Omicron strain can provoke an exacerbation of skin diseases in a person, such as toxic erythema and urticaria. According to her, the oral mucosa is much less likely to be affected by coronavirus.
On the same day, infectious disease specialist Yevgeny Timakov said that when infected with Omicron, a strain of coronavirus, the disease can manifest itself as a single symptom or as a complex. The presence of a runny nose, headache, sore throat, hoarseness and stool disorder almost 100% indicates that a person has Omicron, the doctor noted.
A large-scale vaccination campaign continues in Russia. Citizens can get vaccinated for free. Six coronavirus drugs have been registered in the country: Sputnik V, Sputnik Light, EpiVacCorona, KoviVac, EpiVacCorona-N, and the Sputnik M vaccine for adolescents.
