The regional governor asks Moscow for help to carry out the operation
The Ukrainian counter-offensive in the south of the country has forced the pro-Russian authorities in Kherson on Thursday to request help from Moscow to evacuate civilians. This has been requested by the regional governor, Vladimir Saldo. “We ask that all the inhabitants of the Kherson region, who want to protect themselves from (Ukrainian) missiles, can go to other” Russian regions, he said on Telegram. “Take your children and leave,” he urged in a speech broadcast on social networks.
Balance has asked Russia to provide the necessary help “to organize such a task.” As he explained, he has proposed to evacuate first the inhabitants of the municipalities located on the banks of the Dnipro River, the closest to the front. The idea would be, he has pointed out, to transfer them to Russian regions closer to Kherson, such as the Crimean peninsula, annexed in 2014 by Moscow, and the Rostov, Krasnodar and Stavropol regions, in southern Russia.
Kherson is, together with Zaporizhia, Donetsk and Lugansk, one of the four regions recently annexed by Russia. The announcement comes just a few hours after kyiv troops have retaken five towns in this region.
In recent weeks, the Ukrainian Army has carried out a fierce counteroffensive on the southern and eastern fronts. kyiv claims to have retaken 400 square kilometers of land in Kherson alone in just one week.
On the other hand, British intelligence has stated this Thursday that the Kremlin forces are already preparing to defend the provincial capital, also called Kherson, located on the western bank of the Dnipro River.
