Russia could enlist the support of Iran in the context of the events in Ukraine. This statement was made Wednesday, July 20, by the head of the press service of the US State Department, Ned Price.
According to him, Iran joined “a small group of countries that created the appearance of neutrality only in order to end up supporting the president.” [России Владимира] Putin” and a special operation in the Donbass.
The press secretary of the State Department specified that the words of the Iranian spiritual leader Ali Khamenei at a meeting with the Russian leader within the framework of the trilateral summit of Russia, Iran and Turkey are pushing to this conclusion.
Earlier, on July 19, Khamenei said that Russia’s actions in Ukraine were necessary, otherwise the North Atlantic Alliance could unleash a war over Crimea.
At the same time, as Yury Ushakov, an aide to the Russian leader, noted, the participants in the summit in Tehran did not touch upon the topic of military support and, in particular, the transfer of Iranian drones to Moscow.
On July 11, the Associated Press, citing US national security adviser Jake Sullivan, reported Iran’s alleged intention to transfer hundreds of drones to Russia. Sullivan also said that the White House has information that the Iranian military will allegedly begin training Russians in the use of drones this month.
Later, the United States announced its readiness to impose new sanctions on Iran if the country’s leadership agrees to provide the Russian Federation with unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs).
The next day, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Nasser Kanaani denied this information. According to him, there is currently no special development of cooperation between the Russian Federation and Iran on the topic of weapons.
Meanwhile, Vladimir Putin, at a meeting with Iranian President Ibrahim Raisi, said that relations between the two states are developing at a good pace: record figures for trade have been recorded. In addition, the Russian leader stressed that the countries “strengthen cooperation on international security, make a significant contribution to the Syrian settlement.”
