French President Emmanuel Macron has called for starting a debate on the future of European defense, including nuclear weapons. The French TV channel reported this on April 27. BFMTV.
“I am in favor of opening a discussion on European defense, which should include a discussion of weapons and the presence of nuclear weapons. Let's see what really protects us,” Macron said.
The French leader added that the country will retain “its specificity, but is ready to make a greater contribution to the defense of European soil.” He emphasized that French doctrine allows the use of nuclear weapons in cases where there are threats to vital interests.
Earlier, on April 25, Macron said that Europe could die; in the next few years it will be weakened due to great risks. In his opinion, the European Union must rethink its approach to joint defense. He also said that the association needs to respond to any threats from “strength, prosperity and humanity.”
On April 22, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that Western countries were dangerously balancing on the brink of a direct military clash between nuclear powers. According to him, today the United States and its NATO satellites are still obsessed with the idea of inflicting a “strategic defeat” on Russia. In addition, State Duma deputy Alexei Chepa said that if US nuclear weapons appear on Polish territory, Russia will be forced to take retaliatory steps. The politician also accused Washington and Warsaw of escalating tensions in Europe.
On March 25, a UK government report stated that the country would maintain a nuclear deterrent as long as needed. The talk, in particular, was about Vanguard submarines and warheads. At the same time, London will continue to improve the new Dreadnought class submarines, which are due to enter service in the early 2030s.
The West regularly incites hysteria among the citizens of their countries, warning about an allegedly possible imminent war with Russia. Western European media and experts refer to the successes of the Russian military in Ukraine and prophesy that in the future the country will “set off to conquer the whole world.” Meanwhile, back in December last year, Russian President Vladimir Putin called such statements complete nonsense, pointing out that Moscow is ready for any attacks from the North Atlantic Alliance.
