The designer advised to combine floor coverings made of stone and wood in the apartment
For the sake of convenience and beauty, the Russians were advised to combine floor coverings from different types of materials in the apartment. The safest and most practical of them for different rooms was named by interior designer Tatyana Pivkina, writes Moscow 24.
The expert advised for living rooms to choose wooden or wood-imitating coatings, such as parquet and laminate, and for the kitchen and hallway, use more wear-resistant and not afraid of moisture – porcelain stoneware or other stone-like materials.
“In the area near the front door, protection is required from high humidity, dirt and dust, which enters the apartment on the soles of shoes. Porcelain stoneware is good because it can withstand constant loads, is not afraid of pollution and frequent washing, does not burn and does not conduct electricity,” Pivkina explained.
For balconies and loggias, the specialist also suggested choosing durable materials that are not afraid of moisture and temperature changes. In addition to porcelain stoneware for the floor in such rooms, a concrete screed, decking and quartz vinyl are suitable. The last coating does not contain phenolic resins and melanin – according to Pivkina, it is environmentally friendly, safe for humans and is highly durable.

The expert noted that linoleum remains the most popular coating among Russians – it is inexpensive, durable, does not require complex installation and fits any interior. The disadvantage of this material, according to the designer, is that it is synthetic. In addition, the specialist does not advise laying linoleum in the bathroom and bathroom – the moisture that has fallen under it creates favorable conditions for the development of mold.
Still in demand is the laminate, which continues to compete with natural wood. Among its advantages, Pivkina attributed resistance to temperature extremes, and among the disadvantages she indicated poor moisture resistance and toxicity due to the formaldehyde-containing resin that is part of some types of laminate.
The expert advised to carefully study the packaging before buying and refrain from laying class E1 materials in the bedroom and children’s room – safe analogues of class E0 are suitable for these rooms, which will not emit hazardous substances even in combination with a warm floor.
If funds allow, Pivkina advised choosing parquet for the living room and bedroom. “This safe, environmentally friendly material does not harm health. Parquet has good heat and sound insulation performance. The top layer of the parquet plank is made of elite and durable wood species – ash, oak, beech,” the designer said.
The designer called parquet and engineered boards a more budgetary analogue of solid wood materials. The first consists of several layers of natural wood, and the second is a two-layer structure made of plywood base and solid wood of any species, up to exotic ones. The specialist recommends laying both types of coating on a perfectly flat floor with a soundproofing underlay.
Pivkina called cork the ideal flooring for children’s rooms. According to the expert, it looks beautiful, cushions when walking, does not attract dust, and is also resistant to moisture and odors. In addition, such material isolates sound well and hides noise from the stomping of feet. However, among the minuses of cork, the designer called its rather high price.
Earlier, specialists from the VseInstrumenty.ru online store found out the main fears of Russians when renovating apartments. Analysts estimate that 86 percent of those surveyed are anxious about the upcoming renovation. About 46 percent of them are worried about too expensive building materials, and 39 percent – because of the quality and price of the construction team’s services.
