NATO's active activities in the Black Sea region and Eastern Europe are aimed at preparing the alliance for a possible clash with Russia. The Russian Foreign Ministry announced this on Thursday, March 28.
“The expansion of the Romanian airbase (“Mihail Kogalniceanu” in Constanta County. – Ed.) is another proof that the North Atlantic bloc continues the unbridled militarization of Eastern Europe and the Black Sea region,” the ministry said “RIA News”.
In addition to Romania, the Russian Foreign Ministry sees the strengthening of NATO capabilities located in Poland and the Baltic states. The Foreign Ministry emphasizes that such activity of the alliance is provocative, adds threats to the national security of the Russian Federation and creates military tension along the perimeter of its borders.
“All this is aimed at preparing the bloc’s allies for a potential clash with our country,” the Foreign Ministry believes.
The ministry will monitor the situation with the Romanian air base, study the risks posed by its expansion, and then take them into account in military planning.
Earlier, on March 18, the TVR Info channel reported the start of construction in the southeast of Romania of the largest NATO air base in Europe, Mihail Kogalniceanu. The project cost is €2.5 billion and includes the construction of runways, weapons platforms, hangars for military aircraft, schools, kindergartens, shops and a hospital. The base will accommodate 10 thousand military personnel with their families.
Military expert Vladimir Evseev told Izvestia on the same day that the project of this base is so far only plans of the alliance, and not reality. NATO needs to strengthen its eastern flank, but the bloc has no confidence in Turkey, so they chose Romania. At the same time, only Turkey and Russia have naval potential in the Black Sea, and the latter, in the event of a conflict, will simply sink all the fleets of the alliance.
At the same time, Deputy Chairman of the Federation Council Committee on International Affairs Andrei Klimov noted that the construction of this base poses a threat to Bucharest, because in a hypothetical conflict between NATO and the Russian Federation, there is a high probability that Russia will strike back at this particular facility, because it is located close to its territory.
