Merchants say that “expectations are not good” and believe that “citizens will prioritize spending on summer vacations”
The complex moment that the pocket of citizens is going through as a result of the price increase unleashed this year has left without effect the first day of sales in Murcia, where the majority of merchants and customers agree that expectations “are not good at all ».
This is what Ana Belén Martínez assures LA TRUTH in the corridors of El Corte Inglés on Avenida de la Libertad, a client who points out that “people are not here to throw money away now.” “If I see something for a wedding that I have in October, maybe I’ll take it, but spending to spend, of course not,” she clarifies.
In the same vein, the manager of the Bershka store, María José Montoya, states that even the previous year, with the Covid-19 still very present, they had better expectations. “People took to the streets then because they wanted to clear their heads or wear a new garment, but now the money will be spent on vacations or other more necessary things,” she says.
Likewise, Montoya points out that, in addition, there is no possibility of offering greater discounts – in most of them they reach 50% – due to the economic losses that the stores also carry. “There has to be a profit margin,” he attests.
According to Irene Carmona, an assistant at Pull & Bear, another reason why the kick-off of the sales has not generated the effect of yesteryear could be due to online purchases. This practice, which years ago did not generate enough trust, is now one of the favorite ways for customers to buy. “On our website we do receive many orders as soon as the sales are inaugurated,” she added.
Although there are always exceptions to the general trend. In Zara, the first brand of Inditex, it was possible to see a stamp typical of previous years, with queues to access the establishment and pay. “They go directly to the checkouts after taking four or five things and they don’t even go through the changing rooms,” says a sales assistant, Noelia Hidalgo. El Corte Inglés, another of the large chains, was also one of the points where an influx more similar to other years was registered.
