The oldest person in the world, Japanese Tomiko Itooka, died a few days ago at 116 years. This was announced this Saturday by spokespersons for the city where he lived, Ashiya. Itooka had four children and five grandchildren and as of 2019 lived in a nursing home.
The old woman died precisely there on December 29. «Mrs. Itooka gave us courage and hope throughout his long life. We thank you for that,” the mayor of Ashiya, Ryosuke Takashima, 27, explained in a statement.
Born May 23, 1908 in Osaka, near Ashiya, Itooka was recognized as the oldest person in the world last summer after the death in August, in a residence in Olot (Gerona) of the Spanish María Branyas Morera, at the age of 117.
Saw world wars and pandemics
The woman, who had two brothers, lived through world wars and pandemics, as well as technological advances. When he was a student he played volleyball and in his old age I enjoyed eating bananas and drinking Calpisa popular milk drink in Japan, according to the mayor’s statement.
In Japanwomen generally enjoy long lives, but the country faces an increasingly serious demographic crisis, as the increase in the elderly population causes medical and social expenses to skyrocket, with an increasingly scarce active population to cover them.
In September, Japan had more than 95,000 people aged 100 or older, of whom 88% were women. Of the country’s 124 million inhabitants, almost a third are 65 years old or older.
