One in five labels with the price per unit of measurement are wrongaccording to the latest study by the Organization of Consumers and Users (OCU). This occurs despite the fact that supermarkets have the obligation to indicate this standard price, per kilo or per liter, so that consumers can compare the value of different products.
The study has reviewed prices of ten consumer products in 28 different supermarket chains and has diagnosed all types of errors, such as calculating the unit price based on net weight instead of the drained weight, incorrect rounding, wrong measurements or inconspicuous prices.
The items whose prices contained the greatest number of errors according to the OCU study have been the shower gelsthe eggsdeodorant, detergent and canned food.
The physical supermarkets that accumulate the most errors are Hiperdino, Carrefour Market and La Despensawhere the failure rate exceeded 30%; while Eroski, Más, Bon Preu and Eroski Center have been those with the lowest number of errors with less than 10% of the total products analyzed.
The web pages They also present errors when reporting equivalent prices, such as Mercadona which does not show this price on the results screen, or La Despensa, which does not provide space on the website to indicate them.
“Difficult to defend”
OCU denounces that supermarket chains “do not pay enough attention to the price indications on the shelves” since when the calculation presents some complication, the number of errors skyrockets; something they consider “difficult to defend” because the regulations have been in force since 2022.
In a context in which the reduflation is increasingly frequent, OCU asks the competent authorities in the field of consumption to increase control over prices and apply the sanctioning regime where recurring failures are observed or “otherwise consumers will be deprived of their main tool of protection.” price comparison”, according to the organization.
