The Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation announced the release of hostages in a mosque in Mariupol at the request of Erdogan
Russian fighters from a special forces group freed hostages held by Ukrainian nationalists in a mosque in Mariupol. On Sunday, April 17, the official representative of the Russian Defense Ministry, Major General Igor Konashenkov, told reporters.
According to him, the special operation was carried out in the Primorsky district of the city after the appeal of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. Russian special forces managed to unblock the building of the mosque and destroy 29 militants, including mercenaries who arrived in Ukraine from other countries.
As a result, all the hostages were released and redirected to a safe place. As clarified in the Russian military department, the released are citizens of one of the CIS countries.
On April 16, the Ministry of Defense reported that the entire urban area of Mariupol had been completely cleared of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU). It was clarified that the remnants of the Ukrainian group were blocked on the territory of the Azovstal metallurgical plant.
