An Israeli official said on Monday that Prime Minister Naftali Bennett and Foreign Minister Yair Lapid had agreed to dissolve parliament, which would call for new elections, and that Lapid would in the meantime take over as prime minister, confirming local media reports.
The official added that a vote would be held in parliament next week, after which Lapid would become prime minister.
Lapid and Bennett are expected to issue two statements at 8:00 pm (1800 GMT).
In June 2021, Lapid and Bennett formed a coalition that was unlikely to be formed after two years of political stalemate, which ended the stay of former Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for a record period in the rule of Israel.
