The indigenous known as “indigenous Tanaru” or “indigenous from the hole”, who lived isolated for nearly three decades in the Brazilian state of Rondonia, near the border with Bolivia, was found dead by the National Indigenous Foundation (FUNAI) on last Tuesday.
The agency – which explained that the man died of natural causes – confirmed this information over the weekend.
The “indigenous of the hole” was the last survivor of his community, who belonged to an unknown ethnic group.
They called him that because he spent most of his time hiding or sheltering in holes that he dug in the ground.
For decades, in which his territory was attacked and his friends and family were killed, he resisted any attempts at contact by people outside his world, setting traps and shooting arrows at anyone who came. approached him.
Colourful feathers
The institution reported that they found the dead man in his hammock during a round of monitoring and surveillance, and that they had not found “traces of the presence of people on the site, nor were marks seen in the forest along the road.”
In addition, they pointed out, there were no signs of violence or fights, since the utensils that he normally used were in their usual place.
In any case, his body will undergo an autopsy to confirm the causes of his death.
When he was found, his body was in a state of decomposition, and because it was adorned with brightly colored feathers, authorities believe he had been prepared for his death.
His exact age is unknown, but it is estimated that he could be around 60 years old.
In the Brazilian jungle, at least 114 indigenous peoples have been identified who live in isolation, without contact with the Western world.
