Career consultant at the Synergy University Career Center Alina Dzyuba listed three types of reasons for overwork among company employees. In conversation with the agency RuNews24.ru on Monday, February 5, the specialist identified three types of reasons why company employees overwork and do not fit their duties into working hours.
She included in the first group circumstances that the employee himself can control. In particular, we are talking about the inability to correctly distribute working time and break down tasks into “priority and potential”, “urgent and lasting”, the TV channel notes “360”. A biased assessment of your strengths and the inability to say “no” can also prevent you from completing work tasks on time. The latter is a psychological factor, but you can work with this either independently or with a psychologist.
Life troubles can also have an impact when an employee has no desire to return home and it is easier for him to create the appearance of a heavy workload. The specialist also included in the group the hope for a salary increase, when it seems that this depends on the quantity, and not on the quality and effectiveness of work. Fear of dismissal, earning a positive reputation, and workaholism can also lead to overwork.
In the second group, Dzyuba included circumstances directly dependent on the company or employer. We are talking about complex bureaucratic processes when tasks are sent out with deadlines already burning, and employees are forced to stay late in order to meet deadlines. Also, there may be overtime because it is “accepted” in the company, which is an indicator of an unhealthy climate and a specific corporate culture. In addition, overwork occurs when the company does not have processes in place, there is no center for distributing tasks and there is no understanding of who is responsible for what.
Also, often a key role in overtime is played by the manager’s usual habit of delaying until the last minute and handing over a task at the last moment. Also, senior management may biasedly assess the volume and timing of tasks when existing volumes are not taken into account.
The specialist included factors that do not depend on any of the parties in the third group. Processing may be influenced by the specifics of the field of activity, for example, seasonality, sale of specific products (flowers, fruits), provision of specific services (organization of events, fireworks, etc.). Processing can also be influenced by external circumstances when the market changes or political troubles.
On February 4, Alexander Safonov, a professor at the Financial University under the Government of the Russian Federation, said that as a general rule, an employee has every right to turn off the phone or ignore calls from management when the working day is over, but there are some nuances. For example, if he works on irregular working hours. For all overtime, a person must be given additional days of rest, the site writes. aif.ru.
On January 26, a study by the services “Rabota.ru” and “Sber EAPTEKA” showed that 75% of Russians from time to time experience severe fatigue and tiredness during or after work. Of these, 46% said that they feel low energy only sometimes, and 29% – quite often. A quarter of the survey participants (25%) did not complain about chronic fatigue, writes RT.
Loss of energy manifests itself in the form of decreased efficiency, apathy, sleep problems, mood swings, irritability and appetite disturbances.
In November, a survey by the job search service SuperJob showed that 61% of Russians support reducing the working week from 40 to 39 hours. 16% of respondents were against a shortened working week. Russians fear that in this regime wages will be reduced, but “overtime will remain,” writes NSN.
Last May, lawyer Stepan Polyansky said that an employee is not required to overwork, since the working day standard established by the Labor Code (LC) is a maximum of 40 hours a week. Cases where overtime is required are extremely rare.
In February 2022, a survey by the Zarplata.ru research center showed that about a third of Russians often work above normal – on weekends and after working hours. At the same time, only 38% of respondents receive payment for overtime hours, the TV channel notes. “Star”. 25% of respondents reported that they are overworked due to tasks added by management that should be handled by other specialists.
