An art teacher living in the Chinese city of Guangzhou received compensation of 40,000 yuan (about € 5790) in a labor lawsuit: the woman was fired because her cat appeared during an online class.
The facts date back to last June when the teacher known as Luo was giving a lesson in live streaming. Suddenly her pet cat entered her camera’s field of view five times.
The online education company that ran the virtual classrooms fired Lou, citing the apparitions of the feline on screen as their motivation: according to the Guangzhou Daily reported, the Luo company had taken part in “non-educational” activities during the lessons and that he was also 10 minutes late from a previous class.
Luo appealed the decision in arbitration, but the company refused to accept the order to compensate the teacher for unfair dismissal and challenged him in court.
Deciding on the case, Guangzhou Tianhe People’s Court Judge Liao Yajing said that if employers require their staff to work from home, they should not have the same expectations as if they were working in an office, Central Radio reported. Network: “The rules of the employer should not only comply with the law, but should also be fair and reasonable,” said the judge who sentenced the company to pay the teacher compensation.
