Tesla will continue to pay their employees that they will be called up in Ukraine, or willing to participate voluntarily. The war started by Russia in the Ukrainian territory does not directly involve the American brand, which in fact has no factories on site. However, it cannot be said that Tesla is light years away from the conflict, as its cars are present in the countries involved. Furthermore, according to various American sources, some employees have Ukrainian citizenship, thus being potentially eligible to go to serve in their country.
There is currently no foreign military fighting for Ukraine, and many European countries have warned their citizens to join the fighting. The risk is to give Russia reasons to widen the war perimeter. Those with dual citizenship, on the other hand, could legitimately run in defense of their nation currently under attack in several places. Tesla, in the specific case, would pay up to three months’ salary to the employee engaged in a war situation.
Tesla has already made some decisions to relieve, as much as possible, the populations affected by the conflict and their neighbors. In Poland, Hungary and Slovakia, for example, the brand has made Supercharging columns free to charge electric cars (even non-Tesla ones). In addition, Elon Musk sent Starlink material to Ukraine to ensure an Internet connection even in conflict zones. There have already been two deliveries since Russia invaded Ukraine in the last week of February. With the latest shipment of material there were also electric generators and solar panels, to guarantee energy even in situations of line interruptions.
Musk recently advised Europe to focus more on nuclear power, and to reactivate dormant power plants to have less dependence on the energy of countries such as Russia. Tesla’s founder stressed that the move would also be useful in the fight against climate change.
