The Taliban government in Afghanistan on Saturday ordered women to cover their faces in public, in a return to a hallmark policy of their previous hard-line government and an increase in restrictions that caused outrage in the country and the United States. outside.
A decree by the group’s supreme leader, Haibatullah Akhundzada, said that if a woman did not cover her face when outside, her father or closest male relative would receive a visit and could be arrested or removed from public office.
“We urge the world to cooperate with the Islamic Emirate and the people of Afghanistan. Don’t bother us. Don’t bring more pressure because history bears witness. Afghans will not be affected by the pressure,” Mohammad Khalid Hanafi, minister of Propagation of Virtue and Prevention of Vice, told a news conference.
The ideal face covering is the blue burqa, which was mandatory for women in public during the previous Taliban rule from 1996 to 2001, the group said.
