About 300 flights were canceled at Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport, one of the busiest airports in Europe, Dutch news agency NPA reported.
NS, the railway operator, has suspended all trains in the north of the Netherlands.
Dubbed “Polly”, the storm prompted the Royal Meteorological Institute to issue a red alert, a rating meaning “real danger”.
A red alert was issued in the regions of Noord-Netherlands, Friesland, Vivoland and the Isselmeer region, and an orange-yellow alert applied in the rest of the country.
The Dutch Water Areas Administration urged residents to postpone their travel if possible, given that wind speeds will reach red alert areas between 100 and 120 kilometers per hour, when wind speeds on Lake Isselmeer reach 130 kilometers per hour.
The country’s highways also witnessed serious material damage and accidents, as the entire A9 highway was temporarily closed to remove trees that fell on the road, and some other highways witnessed truck overturns due to the strong winds.
