Stellantis he defined his strategy software for the use of new generation technological platforms, starting from the already existing functionalities of connected vehicles to transform the way motorists interact with them.
Stellantis over-the-air (OTA) software updates
The digital transformation will bring Stellantis vehicles from current ones electronic structures to one open software platform, which integrates seamlessly with motorists’ digital lives and adds innovative features and services through updates over-the-air (OTA). This function allows the vehicles to always be up to date, even years after their construction.
Stellantis plans to invest further € 30 billion by 2025 to carry out its transformation in the field of software and electrification.
Stellantis software strategy goes hand in hand with i electrification programs of the Group’s vehicles, presented in detail atEV Day in July 2021, with the aim of achieving over 70% sales in Europe and over 40% sales in the United States of low-emission vehicles (LEV) by 2030.
Stellantis chips and semiconductors with Foxconn
In addition to the closure of Mobile Drive scheduled for December 31, 2021, the new non-binding memorandum of understanding signed with Foxconn aims to design a family of microcontrollers specially designed to support Stellantis and third party customers.
The partnership aims to develop four families of chips that will cover more than 80% of the company’s microcontroller needs, helping to greatly simplify the supply chain. The adoption and installation of products in Stellantis vehicles is expected by 2024.
Stellantis autonomous driving and connected cars
Stellantis also continues its projects for the development of the autonomous driving with Waymo. Since the Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid equipped with Waymo Driver provide thousands of fully autonomous rides in Phoenix, Arizona (USA), Stellantis and Waymo have now expanded their partnership to local delivery services.
Stellantis will grow its software and connected services business through five key pillars:
- Services and subscriptions
- On-Demand functionality
- Data service and services dedicated to fleets
- Pricing and resale value policy
- Customer conquest, customer loyalty and cross-selling
Today, Stellantis boasts 12 million connected cars “Monetizable” globally. By 2026, growth is expected to 26 million vehicles and about 4 billion euros in revenues. By 2030, they will be achieved 34 million vehicles and around 20 billion euros in annual revenues. By “monetizable” we mean the vehicle in its first five years of life.
Leveraging its data collection capabilities, Stellantis will launch a insurance program based on use, offered through its captive finance divisions in Europe and North America, with plans to expand globally.
New Stellantis platforms for connected cars
With an expected launch in 2024, the three new platforms will be deployed, on a scale, across Stellantis’ four vehicle platforms over the next two years. The main one is the new electrical / electronic (E / E) and software architecture, STLA Brain.
STLA Brain has a completely capacity “Over the air” with 30 modules addressed and it is much more flexible than the current 10 modules. It is a service-oriented structure that is fully integrated with the cloud, connecting the electronic control units inside the vehicle with the car’s high-performance central computer (HPC) via high-speed data. Breaks today’s link between generations of hardware and software, allowing software developers to quickly create and update features and services without waiting for new hardware to be launched. These OTA updates they drastically reduce costs for customers and Stellantis, simplify maintenance for the user and maintain vehicle residual values.
STLA SmartCockpit, created on STLA Brain, will seamlessly integrate with the digital lives of vehicle occupants to create a “Third space” customizable. Studies show that customers spend an average of four years of life in their vehicles and this figure continues to rise. Stellantis SmartCockpit, powered by the Mobile Drive joint venture between Stellantis and Foxconn, offers applications based on Artificial Intelligence (AI) such as navigation, voice assistance, the e-commerce market and payment services.
STLA AutoDrive developed in collaboration with BMW, it will offer level 2, level 2+ and level 3 autonomous driving capabilities and will be continuously updated OTA.
Stellantis hiring engineers
To support this transformation, Stellantis is creating a Software & Data Academy to relocate beyond 1,000 in-house engineers in different roles, giving birth to one new software community. The company is also hiring the best software and AI talent from the technology industry and other industries globally.
By 2024, Stellantis aims to have 4,500 software engineers, creating talent hubs around the world.
