The director of the city’s central government mortuary, Sinh Camara, said the morgue had received 91 bodies after a fuel tanker exploded.
Local sources revealed that large crowds of residents went to collect the fuel leaking from the tanker in the Wellington area, but a bus collided with it and a huge explosion occurred.
President Julius Maada Bio, who was in Scotland to attend the UN climate talks, lamented the “heavy loss of life”.
“My deepest sympathies are with the families who lost loved ones and who were maimed as a result,” he wrote on Twitter.
A member of the Red Cross said relief operations were still going on Saturday morning, which could indicate a high death toll.
