Severe storms raged in Austria and Croatia on Thursday. The damage amounts to several million.
Munich – Almost three million euros in damage and several hundred fire brigade deployments: That is the result of the severe storm that swept across southern Austria on Thursday (June 2nd). The state of Carinthia was hit hardest.
There, the fire brigades had to move out to around 300 operations, as reported by ORF Carinthia. Significant storm damage has occurred in the Völkermarkt district in particular. The hailstones stayed several centimeters high in this region and clogged the drains – which in turn led to flooding late Thursday.
Severe storms in Austria: damage in the millions – Croatia also affected by storms
This weather has devastating consequences for the economy. The Austrian hail insurance company expects a total damage in agriculture of almost three million euros. More than 12,000 hectares of agricultural land were downright devastated in several districts.
But not only Austria had to struggle with the heavy storms. Like the Croatian news portal Yutarnijilist reported, there was also severe storm and hail damage in Croatia on Thursday. “Catastrophic situations” had occurred in Zagorje in particular, with hailstones covering the ground several centimeters high. Agriculture Minister Marija Vuckovic even traveled to the affected area to get an idea of the situation.
It wasn’t until the end of May that things had become extremely uncomfortable in this country too. Parts of Bavaria had been hit by heavy hail and heavy rain. (kuc/dpa)
